It is only your choice of the right product that is going to make all the difference.
They are special cosmetics for the skin, eyes, lips, cheeks and your nails. There are foundation creams and powders, concealer, blushers, eyeliners, lip liners, lip gloss, lipstick – to name a few. The list is unending! While it is convenient to have these products in the comfort of our home, it is almost impossible to carry them all with us when we are on the go. But, the problem has a solution – Make-up kits!
Why do you need a make-up kit?
Our daily life has become hectic. It is fraught with uncertainties and sudden changes in schedules. Changes in weather and levels of pollution in the atmosphere have taken their toll on our skin. In a world of challenges and overwhelming competition, looking presentable is no longer a choice. It is a necessity. We have to maintain a fresh look and a pleasant demeanor at all time. A make-up kit is a handy tool for this. You can create any look you want, and transform into your pleasant self
Make-up for different features
There are a wide variety of make-up products used to highlight different features of the face. Take a look at the different articles of make-up used for highlighting the various features of the face.
Eyes – Eye shadow, Eye liner, Mascara
Eyes are the most expressive of all our organs. They can be defined to add beauty, using various tools.
Eye shadow adds a hint of color to our eye lids. They come in many colors and textures.
Mascara is applied directly on the eye lashes. They make the lashes look thicker and denser.
Eye-liner helps to create a unique and defined look to your eye.
Cheeks – Blush, Bronzer
Highlighting the cheekbones can enhance the beauty of your face.
Blusher is available in various shades of pink and can be applied with a big brush, on the cheekbones. Blush gives the impression of being in the ‘pink of health’, with a natural glow. Powder blusher is ever the popular type of blusher. It is much convenient and portable than the messy cream blusher.
As a thumb rule, always choose a blusher that is nearest to the color of your natural blush. This will give a warm, healthy hue to your cheeks, rather than giving an impression of a permanently blushing bride!
Bronzer comes in golden tones and helps make your face look sun tanned.
Lips – Lipstick, Lip gloss, Lip liner, Lip Stain
Lipsticks are available in a myriad of colors and shades. They can be shiny, matte finish or smudge proof. Some of them can last the entire day and still retain their shine and gloss.
Lip gloss is usually clear or in light color and can be used alone or over lipstick. Gloss gives lips a shine.
Lip stains give your lips a color that gives the impression of eating a popsicle, a stain, and hence the name.
Lip liner is a small, thin pencil that is used to outline the lips. This helps in defining the lips and keeps the lipstick from bleeding into the skin around the lips.
Face – Foundation, Powder, Concealer
Foundation helps to even out skin tone. It is almost miraculous because it can cover up blemishes and freckles and evens out your skin tone. Foundation also acts as a protective barrier against the elements, as well as stopping dirt and grime from blocking your pores.
It can be quite a challenge to find the exact foundation that will match the tone of your skin, but several creams claim to adapt to your skin tone. The liquid and cream varieties are more popular.
Oil – based liquid foundation is best for dry or more mature skin. They give a matte finish. Water – based liquid foundation is best for a lighter coverage. They are suited for oily or sensitive skins. Creams provide a heavier coverage than liquid foundations. Creams are best suitable dry skin. They offer a glossy finish.
Powder sets your foundation in place. It helps giving a smooth finish to your make – up. It also blots out the shiny patches along the T- zone of the face (forehead, nose and chin). Powder can be loose and translucent or may be pressed and applied with a brush or pad. Loose powder is often preferred because it spreads easily. Pressed powder is found to leave streaks. A translucent powder with a matte finish will be a good choice for absorbing oil off your face.
Concealer is skin toned already and is used to cover up skin blemishes and dark circles around the eye, that your foundation cannot. As it is not meant to be noticed, choose a shade that is half a shade lighter than your natural skin tone. A yellow-based shade is recommended for using under the eye, as it will successfully mask the dark circles.
Choosing the right makeup for your skin type
It is very important to know your skin type before you venture to buy a make-up kit. Different types of skin are affected differently by beauty products. Here is a general guideline of the proper choice of make-up kit for different skin types.
If you have an oily skin, look for products that are specifically made for this type of skin. There is not much of a problem in case of eye makeup, but it will be preferable to use a matte eye shadow so that oily eyelids could be avoided.
For foundation and powder, look for products that will not irritate or harm your skin. Using make up on an oily skin will minimize the shiny tone of your skin and will help protect it.
One of the main reasons of using make up on dry skin is to keep it hydrated. Before applying makeup, don’t forget to use a good moisturizing cream. Buy makeup that is specifically labeled for dry skin, because they usually include moisturizers. This will keep your skin hydrated and prevent cracking. Keep a moisturizer handy and apply it throughout the day. Reapply makeup periodically.
Combination skin types are the most common of the skin types. With this skin, you can wear most kinds of makeup, but you need to be aware of where your skin is oily and where it is dry. Some women have an oily T-zone – the bridge of the nose and the forehead, with dry cheeks and chin. For such skin, look for a pressed compact powder that will help keep down the shine in the face.

The Eye Shadow Brush
The flat shape and densely packed fiber of this brush give it the ability to pack on shadow and build up an intense color. The tip of the brush may be used to draw a streak of highlight along the brow. Its redeeming feature is that it can be used both with powder and cream types of eye shadow.

This brush is the best known and the most popular among all the brushes used in the make-up industry. It is very convenient to work the foundation into your skin using these flat shaped brushes with rounded sable -haired edges. This unique shape allows it to reach every nook and cranny of your face. It is possible to blend make-up with a professional touch using this brush.
The Lip Brush

It is not just the cosmetics that you use that bring that ethereal beauty and glow to your face. The brushes you use matter a lot. Always invest in good brushes of quality. They may be more expensive, but they will last long and serve you well.
Tips for buying a Make-up kit
- If your make-up kit is older than six months, it is time to discard it and replace it with a new one.
- Brushes have to be maintained scrupulously clean and have to be washed and cleaned periodically. Unclean brushes and old make -up kits are the breeding places of bacteria.
- A designer make-up kit may cost more, but you can be assured of the quality of the product. Though many of the non-designer brands of make-up are of passably good quality, their longevity is a debatable point. Do not compromise the safety of your skin.
- Old make-up sets are potentially harmful to the skin. Discard them periodically.
- While buying foundation, always buy a shade lighter than your own skin color.
- If you have an oily skin, buy a water-based make -up. If you have a dry skin, buy an oil-based make-up.
- Before buying any product for your skin, do the ‘patch test’. Apply a little of the product on your skin and leave it for a while. If you don’t feel any irritation of the skin, even after 5 minutes, then the product is safe.
- If you are a beginner and are not very comfortable with using the foundation, use a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream instead. They are not only lighter, but can also be easily corrected, if there is a mistake.
- Tips to blush! If you have a fair skin, pink and peach blush suit you. If you have a tanned skin, dusty rose and bronzers would look beautiful. For a dark-skinned person, blushers are a boon. All colors suit them. Deep colors are particularly suitable.
- To apply a blusher, smile big, and apply the blusher in the ‘apples of the cheek’ in circular motion.
Remember to check the date expiry before buying make-up kits and all other cosmetics!
